Jesus’ Teachings on the Cost of Discipleship

Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ entails requirements such as being part of the Christian family by helping to preach the gospel around the world, helping the needy, following all the teachings taught by Jesus as well as the Commandments given by God. During His teachings to His followers, Christ commissioned the people to spread the teachings of Christian discipleship and baptize them as well. Any teaching on Christian discipleship cannot end without the mention of Jesus Christ just like Wood Science and Todd Shupe.

Becomimg a follower of Jesus calls for patience and perseverance. Getting saved costs individuals no fee at all but then becoming a disciple of Christ calls for sacrifice and commitment. Being a Christian means we only on Christ and nothing else on top of it. Jesus explained the price one pays to be a disciple in three dimensions.

Discipleship means owning nothing else apart from Jesus Christ. Despite teaching His disciples to love others, Christ also stated that we should give up on all to have Him fully. We should always love other people and obey them in the Lord except where they ask or make us sin against God. When Our thoughts or family drag us away from God, we should give up on them and follow Christ. Children should be wise to determine the situations that call for obedience and when they have to give up on family for the sake of God. Asking the wives to be submissive to their husbands is only applicable where righteousness is concerned but they are supposed to turn to Christ every time the men use submission as a tool to fall into sin.

Christ also listed giving up on earthly desires as the price an individual pays for following Him. Jesus asked the followers to be happy in being associated with Him other than being part of the world. Jesus suffered humiliation and rejection on our behalf on the journey to salvation. The cost of discipleship teaches that we all have to pass through the same treatments so as to be called Children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ disciples should avoid actions that result in breaking of the commandments.

The final step of the cost of a Christian disciple is giving up on all material possessions for the sake of Christ. By losing material ownership for Christ means an individual can never equally serve two masters at ago without neglecting one. Becoming a Christian disciple means one has been brought on a price and they are not their own as they are now a slave of Christ who then owns everything. A Christian cannot just add Christ to their material possessions as a way of rounding up their spirituality.

Jesus also used the stories of two people who wanted to become His disciples to emphasize the cost of discipleship. One of them was a very rich man but when Christ told him to give out all his wealth and follow him, he failed. The one who had lost his father decided to bury his father first before claiming his heavenly position.
